Augusta will build on three veterans

The Augusta boys basketball team returns three players with varsity experience from last season's 7-15 team.

Three players. Which means the Orioles will be counting on a lot of inexperienced players.

"We have to look at ways to improve each game," second-year coach David Stephenson said. "It's going to be difficult. Just knowing the kids don't have much experience, how are they going to respond? The older guys will know what to do, but it kind of takes more than three of them."

It helps that 6-foot senior Brett Rawlings returns after running the point last year.

"He's a good ballhandler, usually makes good decisions," Stephenson said. "He's going to give you everything he's got. Being the returning point guard, we'll put a lot on his shoulders."

Northwest girls look to improve with age

The Northwest girls' span of 11 consecutive winning seasons -- including a Class 6A basketball title in 1997 -- seems part of the oh-so-distant past.

That's largely to do with the Grizzlies averaging fewer than six victories since a 20-2 record in 1999-2000.

Northwest's fortunes appear to be on the upswing, though.

"We're all planning on turning it around this year," said second-year coach Jerrod Handy, whose team was 7-14 in 2007-08. "We do have a lot of young girls, but they're all real talented and have the same goals."

The Grizzlies return three starters, including sophomores Brianna Caldwell (9 points, 4 rebounds) and Alaina Shine (8 points, 6.6 rebounds), and junior Kylee Simon (7 points, 7.1 rebounds).

OU wins; Griffin to battle Curry tonight

Juco Women

Added height will help Trinity

The Wichita Trinity girls basketball team had a height problem over the years. But with the addition of 5-foot-10 forward Kendra Crow, along with forward Lizzie Weber, the Knights hope those problems will be fixed.

"Kendra adds a lot of things for us," coach Mark Bohm said. "She adds a physical presence that we haven't had and she's versatile. She will make a big difference for us on the block."

Weber was a second-team all-league selection last season. At 5-foot-10, Bohm will need her to help primarily on the inside, but she will be able to roam out on the perimeter where she is just as dangerous.

"She's more comfortable on the perimeter," Bohm said. "She'll get her touches. We're asking her to do a little more inside for us and to contribute in ways that she might not be used to."

Independent boys to rely on speed, veterans

Wichita Independent's boys basketball team doesn't have a starter taller than 6-foot-2.

Six-foot senior guard Drew Bendell might ask, "What's the bad news?"

"We're going to be fast and athletic," Bendell said. "We don't have big men to slow us down coming up the court. We're going to have a lot of fastbreaks, but we'll also be able to pull the ball out and hit some threes and run some plays."

What the Panthers lack in height, they hope to make up for in speed and experience. The lineup features several capable three-point shooters and, perhaps most importantly, four seniors.

Injury puts dent in Andale girls' depth

With the Andale girls returning all but one senior from its team that qualified for the Class 4A basketball tournament, any goals that coach Mark Kerschen had appeared reasonable.

And then, even before practice started, those hopes dimmed a bit.

Adrienne Fox, a 5-foot-11 senior, suffered a knee injury in the final game of the volleyball season; she had surgery last Wednesday.

"She started last year and she played a lot as a sophomore," Kerschen said. "She was my biggest, strongest, most experienced player."

Now the bulk of the inside game falls on Baylei Hall (5-9 senior). She was key last season when Fox missed multiple games with mononucleosis, but there's little other inside experience.

Freshman helps No. 1 Tar Heels beat Penn

Freshman Tyler Zeller scored 18 points Saturday to help top-ranked North Carolina beat Pennsylvania 86-71 despite playing without reigning national player of the year Tyler Hansbrough.

Deon Thompson added 17 points for the Tar Heels, who led by double figures much of the day yet had trouble putting together a game-sealing run without their injured star senior roaming the paint. North Carolina was also without fellow senior Marcus Ginyard, injuries that forced North Carolina to thrust Zeller and fellow rookie big man Ed Davis into the lineup.

Zeller, a 7-footer, started in Hansbrough's spot and finished 5 for 8 from the field and 8 for 10 from the foul line, though he had just two rebounds. Davis had 10 points and 14 rebounds in 22 minutes.

Tyler Bernardini scored 26 points to lead the Quakers, who hung around much of the way thanks largely to their three-point shooting. But though they managed to cut a 20-point second-half lead to 10 with about 4 minutes left, they never seriously threatened to pull a season-opening upset.

Young Heights girls begin next chapter

With multiple trips to the Class 6A tournament, the Heights girls basketball team has solidified itself as one of the top programs in the state.

However, coach Kip Pulliam doesn't want this year's squad trying to imitate those of years past.

"We've made quite a name for ourselves," Pulliam said. "But we have to make a new identity for ourselves. We have to put our own mark on things."

Last year, the Falcons finished fourth at the state tournament. Gone from that team are guards Jennifer Lane and Amanda Orloske. Without those two, the Falcons will rely a lot on athleticism.

Heights returns several sophomores who saw valuable minutes as freshmen. Leading that group is Mary Sims. The 5-foot-9 guard is very quick and elusive with the basketball. Joining her are 6-foot-1 forward Jhasmin Bowen and 5-foot-11 forward Allegria Chisom. Junior Kamisha Richard a second team all-city player at Southeast last season, will play at Heights this season.
