Friends prepares for tough test in NAIA playoff opener

It's difficult to imagine a college football team with a 10-0 record and No. 5 national ranking being considered an underdog on its home field to a team with two losses.

But that's what Friends coach Monty Lewis thinks his team faces Saturday against Northwestern Oklahoma State in the first round of NAIA playoffs.

Most of Lewis' logic has to do with the lack of success the KCAC has had in the playoffs over the last two seasons. The last win for the conference was in 2005, when Tabor lost in the quarterfinals to the University of Sioux Falls (S.D.).

"There's no question there is pressure on us," Lewis said. "However, we've told our guys to embrace the pressure.

"Pressure isn't created -- it's what you've invested and how well you've performed. We need to come to grips with that."

It's a familiar setup for the Butler Community College football team.

Once again, the Grizzlies are the No. 2 team in the NJCAA poll at the end of regional playoffs and once again, they'll head to Salt Lake City to meet No. 1 Snow College (Utah) in the Top of the Mountains Bowl.

The game is at 1 p.m. on Dec. 6 at Rio Tinto Stadium (20,000), the new home of Major League Soccer's Real Salt Lake franchise.

Last season, Butler defeated Snow 56-27 in the 2-vs.-1 matchup and was voted co-national champion along with Mississippi Gulf Coast. This season, the Grizzlies (10-1) made the long road back to the nation's top two after a season-opening loss to Blinn (Texas) College at Cessna Stadium.

Snow, meanwhile, went through the regular season unbeaten. The Badgers were No. 2 in last week's poll but moved up after then-No. 1 Navarro (Texas) lost to Blinn in the Southwest Conference championship game.

Oklahoma is the immovable object, nearly perfect at home under Bob Stoops and historically strong on defense.

Texas Tech is the irresistible force with a freak-of-nature passing attack.

What happens when they meet Saturday?

College football's championship race turns on the answer.

The second-ranked Red Raiders visit Norman, Okla., to complete the Big 12 South Division trilogy. Texas beat Oklahoma. Texas Tech beat Texas. Now, the finale, with the winner either clinching the South (if it's Tech) or creating three-team chaos at the top of the division (it it's Oklahoma).

The grass on the football field at Cessna Stadium was free of precipitation on Sunday, but Butler defensive back Ryan Downing found it to be an appropriate setting for a snow angel.

The celebration was fitting -- the Grizzlies had just finished off a 29-14 win over Hutchinson in the Region VI championship and were already thinking about their next stop, likely a national title game against Snow (Utah) in the Top of the Mountain Bowl next month.

Since No. 1 Navarro (Tex.) lost on Saturday, No. 2 Snow will probably take over that spot in Monday's rankings and Butler, now No. 3, will likely move to No. 2 and meet Snow in a bid for its second straight national championship.

"I'm going to celebrate this one before I think about that," Butler coach Troy Morrell said.

The Grizzlies created a positive Cessna Stadium memory after nearly seeing their national title hopes vanish with a season-opening loss to Blinn (Tex.) --the team that beat Navarro on Saturday -- on the campus of Wichita State.

Friends football coach Monty Lewis couldn't help but find some humor in the situation when he learned who his undefeated, No. 5 Falcons would host in the first round of the NAIA playoffs.

"There's a little history there," Lewis said, laughing. "You might say that."

While the past is the past, that history does deserve a bit of revisiting. Especially when the NAIA said No. 10 Northwestern Oklahoma State was coming to Wichita when the pairings were announced Sunday afternoon.

It was nine years ago that Lewis, then the coach at Southwestern, guided the Moundbuilders to a KCAC title and a quarterfinal matchup against the Rangers.

Southwestern, then No. 17, tied the game at 10-10 against No. 2 NWOSU in the third quarter before things started to unravel on the way to a 44-10 loss.

There is not a lot of gray area when it comes to Rion Rhoades.

For the second-year football coach at Hutchinson Community College, success is finite. To accomplish goals, you must stay tested.

And Rhoades seems to always pass the test.

"You always want to prove yourself," Rhoades said. "Doing that gives things extra meaning."

The Liberal native and former all-Jayhawk linebacker for the Blue Dragons has guided No. 15 Hutchinson (7-3) to the Region VI title game today -- the Blue Dragons first appearance since 1995 -- against No. 3 Butler at Cessna Stadium.
